The Philippines Most Feared Monster

The Aswang ranks as the most feared creature in Filipino folklore – a shapeshifting monster that preys on pregnant women and children. Unlike many mythological beings confined to remote wilderness, the Aswang lives among humans, appearing as a normal person by day while hunting by night.

Daytime Disguise

By day, the Aswang appears as an ordinary person, often a quiet neighbor or shy villager. They may seem slightly odd – avoiding eye contact, preferring solitude, or appearing sickly. Some traditions say their reflection appears inverted, revealing their true nature.

Nocturnal Horror

At night, the Aswang transforms. Some become monstrous dogs or pigs. Others take the form of a Manananggal – the upper body separating to fly on bat-like wings while the lower half remains hidden. In this form, they hunt using an elongated, thread-like tongue to reach victims through rooftops.

Preferred Prey

Aswang particularly target pregnant women, using their supernatural tongue to consume unborn children. They also prey on sick individuals and corpses, sometimes replacing bodies with banana tree trunks enchanted to resemble the deceased.

Protection and Weaknesses

Filipino tradition offers many defenses. Salt, garlic, and religious objects repel them. A special oil made from coconut and herbs will boil in an Aswangs presence. The tail of a stingray can wound them. Finding and destroying the hidden lower body of a Manananggal before dawn kills the creature.

Cultural Impact

Aswang legends remain vital in Filipino culture, appearing in films, television, and literature. The creatures persistence reflects deep-rooted fears about community, trust, and hidden evil among neighbors.
